How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide by 60. 30 minutes is 0.50, 45 minutes is 0.75, 20 minutes is 0.33, 10 minutes is 0.17. Then add the whole hours: 7 hours 20 minutes is 7.33.
Why does payroll use decimals?
Because pay is hours times rate, and 7:30 times $20 is not $150 on a calculator, while 7.50 times $20 is. Timesheet software stores hours as decimals for the same reason.
What is 7.5 hours in hours and minutes?
7 hours 30 minutes: the 0.5 times 60 is 30 minutes. 7.75 is 7:45; 7.8 is 7:48; 7.25 is 7:15.
What about hundredths that don't land on a minute?
0.33 hours is 19.8 minutes and 0.67 is 40.2. Payroll systems round to the nearest minute, or use two decimals and accept the few seconds of drift. If precision matters, the 6-minute rounding on the time card gives clean tenths.
