About Shift Sums

Shift Sums is one tool: a weekly time card that turns clock-in, clock-out and break times into hours, decimal hours, overtime and gross pay. The three smaller pages answer the questions that come up while using it: how many hours between two times, how to turn minutes into decimals, and how to read military time.

The rules it uses

Hours are subtraction, with 24 hours added when a shift crosses midnight and unpaid breaks removed. Decimal hours are minutes divided by 60. Rounding follows the federal 7-minute rule (29 CFR 785.48) when you turn it on. Overtime follows the Fair Labor Standards Act (over 40 hours in a workweek at 1.5×) or California's Labor Code section 510 (over 8 in a day at 1.5×, over 12 at 2×, seventh-day rules), as you choose. Pay is gross.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't save your week, need an account, or know your contract. Union agreements, other states' daily overtime rules, shift differentials and exempt status all change the answer; check the total against your pay stub and take differences to your employer or your state labour office.
